The Journey of Dirk Martin

After pursuing a career in teaching, Dirk Martin has returned home to continue the legacy of Foxcross Pottery1. His journey, marked with exploration, learning, and teaching, has shaped his unique approach to pottery making. His experiences and the diverse cultures he encountered during his travels have greatly influenced his works.

Dirk’s father, the Delbert Martin (Del) , hooked his interest in pottery when Dirk “learned” that he could express his interest in dinosaurs with clay. Stretching Dirk’s interest from playing in the dirt to making dinosaur figurines with clay. Dirk’s interest in creating with clay grew into creating collections of figurines that were offered for sale in the studio–always selling out during craft tours of Fox Cross. Working with clay gave Dirk the opportunity to create imaginative and useful pottery, a pattern he still follows to this day.

Dirk Martin's creations beautifully capture the delicate balance between art and craft. Each piece is a testament to his mastery with clay and his ability to transform it into something functional and beautiful. While staying true to the traditional craft techniques, instilled in him by his father, he is also pushing the boundaries of the art form. Following the path that the clay leads him on, Dirk continually develops innovative techniques for tending the details of design and functional details while unique creating glazing methods that have earned him a reputation as a trailblazer in the world of pottery.
